The Boyd Windette Memorial Fund was set up to honor the memory of Boyd Windette – a volunteer, referee, teacher and board member at AYSO Region 58 (Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks) for over 20 years – until he quickly and unexpectedly succumbed to lung cancer in December 2022.

Boyd and his wife Pam were first introduced to the program to support their daughter Blair as she played soccer with her teammates and friends.  As Boyd often said, he was initially “coerced” into becoming a referee by other volunteers and friends at the park.  By participating in the games, he quickly grew to love refereeing and making sure the kids at the park were having a fun, fair and safe environment to play.

Over the years, Boyd continued to educate himself and step into new roles at the park. He became both an Advanced Level Referee as well as an Advanced Level Referee Instructor. For 18 years, Boyd took on the role of Referee Instructor at our Region, training people to become Regional Referees and thoughtful volunteers.

Boyd was at our park every Saturday – all day long.  He was committed to walking the fields to provide support to referees, coaches, and players.  He made himself available at the tents to answer questions for anyone who stopped by.  Boyd was a cherished member of the board and referee staff – sharing a laugh, sharing some wisdom, and sharing his passion for program.

Boyd continues to be missed, but his legacy will continue to live on.
